We have been working on this for quite some time. The day has finally arrived where we can tell our customers that they can find our frozen berries at one of the major grocery chains in the Calgary.
Before that could happen though there was a lot of work done to design our new standup resealable pouch, get a company to produce it, acquire new more efficient packaging equipment, but most important, formalize and enhance our existing food safety program so that we could get a license from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to sell our berries right across Canada. Having this license is key to getting into the major grocery chains. Without it, they won’t accept your products (no matter how “Local” you are).
Our food safety program is HACCP based (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) which means that we document everything we do and we get inspected by a CFIA auditor every year or so. It’s an immense of paperwork and record keeping, but the upside is that it opens new markets for our berries. And that’s a good thing!
Over the next few months we will we working to get our berries into the other major chains as well. Stay tuned and we’ll post on social media when that happens.
